The Ride Home

The after-game card

The whole ride home on one screen.

From The Ride Home, by Aaron Lewis, CMPC. New here? The card makes most sense after Observe, the free first tool.

After the game. At the game: Observe. Did they do what they meant to do, whatever happened? On the ride home: Check yourself. Settled? Go. Wound up? Long breath out. Not yet? Just drive. Ask: Want to talk about it, or not right now? What did you think of your game? Then say back what you heard, or ask about one thing they said. Their call: Anything from tonight you want to work on, or just let it go? One game is one game.

Save it to your phone, or send it to whoever else drives your kid home.

Before you say anything: how are you?

Not just about the game. Work, money, family, whatever you’re carrying comes into the car too.

  • Settled? Go ahead.
  • Wound up? One long breath out, longer than the breath in. Then go.
  • Not settled yet? Wait. Just drive. Quiet is a fine answer tonight.
